Lyrical Thursdays - Random

- I think Passenger sounds like Brett Dennen. And when I first started hearing Let Her Go I actually thought it was Brett.

- Parts of Katy Perry's song Dark Horse sounds like Fergie's Glamorous. It took me awhile to figure out what song it reminded me of but it finally dawned on me today.

- I really liked the acoustic version of Imagine Dragon's Demons that I heard on the Coffeehouse satellite radio channel today.

- John Legend's performance and Carole King-Sara Bareilles duet at the Grammy's were my favorite performances of the night.

What songs/artists are you digging recently?

Time to Get Motivated, People

I have always loved quotes, motivational videos, etc.  In high school and college I had a little notebook that I would write in with quotes I liked.  Then I started emailing them to myself and kept them in a folder.  I don't have access to that account anymore or I do and I don't remember the password.  I still have that notebook but now I have a board on Pinterest.  I also have an ongoing Word document on my desktop with quotes.  Oh technology...

I use quotes or videos to motivate me at work.  I use them to motivate me to get my butt off the couch and exercise or go for a run.  Sure they don't always work and I think "yea whatever."  I don't typically take the time to watch videos that people post on Facebook or email me.  But yesterday on a blog I read, Generous Impulses, she posted a video that contained an over abundance of motivation.  Take 6 minutes to watch the video and then use it to fuel yourself in work, relationships, exercise, or wherever in your life you need that extra push.  and while you're at it smile!!!

Big Hair Don't Care

I am not a make up expert nor a hair expert but I try my darndest to look good on normal basis.  There are some days, typically the weekends, that I give my skin and hair a break.  I wish I was better at doing my hair but I pretty much am the worst.

I am in need of a hair cut currently but I quit my hair lady or she quit me.  Haven't really decided exactly.  I wasn't  happy with my last couple cuts and when she moved my appointment twice and said she would call to reschedule and never did....well I'm done.  So I asked for recommendations on Facebook for someone in my area.  I contacted one of the ladies recommended and never got a response to the message I sent.  So I'm just going to let it be for now.  I can trim up my own bangs thanks to a tutorial I watched on YouTube a year or so ago.

Now I live in Texas and big hair is normal...expected.  I throw large hot rollers in it most days than not now and that helps with the volume and the lack of a cut.

I use dry shampoo on my clean hair. What?!?!?  It acts like a texturizing spray which is something I learned via Pinterest or some blog I read.  I had been using Sauve's dry shampoo but when it was almost out I picked up the Not Your Mother's brand.  Verdicts still out on how I like the new one but the Sauve one is great.

I also use Big Sexy Hairs texture powder.  Don't use too much and make sure to get on the ends of your hair for extra umphing (it's totally a word) powder.

And then a comb just doesn't cut it for my teasing.  So I found this Conair teasing brush that is amazing.

So after all that I can get a bit of volume and I can look past the fact that I need a hair cut.  This is what's working for now but come another couple weeks I will have to definitely get a cut.  Oh the joys of being a woman and being in sales.

What are your hair tips and tricks???

Weekend Rest and refuel

Our weekends are more and more low key these days...for now... and I'm loving it.

Friday night after we were able to break ourself out of the ice that covered everything from our ice storm,

we went to our friend's Brandon and Michelle's place.  It was to see our other friend's Sarah and TJ and their son Tommy who is adorable.  They live an hour or so north of the city so we don't get to see them often.

While we were there I got this video of Harper and had to replicate her look.  I mean girl's got style.

Saturday morning we got up and went to the Food Truck Park that has opened on our side of town.  There are three throughout the city now and we've been wanting to go and finally made that happen.  We ate from the truck called Skratch and it was delicious.

Jarad had the Bayou City Fried Chicken Sandwich.  It was a boneless, skinless chicken thigh topped with jalapeno slaw, Louisiana mayo on a brioche.  He didn't share and so I'm guessing it was good.

I had the Disco Inferno fries.  It was french fries covered with beef gravy, shaved rib-eye, melted cheese, sour cream and bacon.   They were delicious and would defiantly have them again.

The rest of Saturday was spend lounging, FaceTiming with the sisters and fams

Who doesn't wear crazy hats when FaceTiming?!?!?!
and for the second Saturday in a row I was in bed by 10pm. wow!!!!

Getting to bed so early made me super productive on Sunday.  I went out for a 2.25 mile run since the weather was gorgeous.  Cleaned the house, did all the laundry, grocery shopped and meal prepped for Jarad's lunches.  He's trying to be healthier as well.  I am making his lunches rather than buying frozen, prepared items.  Thank goodness I like to cook.  Sunday night Jarad went to a friend's to watch Royal Rumble.  I can't do wrestling.  So I went to Katrina's and we had spaghetti and watched the Grammy's.

It was a perfect weekend and now the week is calling.  We may have another ice storm or snow or whatever happens tomorrow.  Whoever knows tho.....

Make it a great day(week) or not... the choice is yours!!!

My Healthier Lifestyle 2014...initial goals

I'm finally getting back on track. The holidays throw everyone off track and then I always have a work event in Dallas for a week the beginning of January. Now that it's all behind me I can focus on me again. So here are some of my current focuses or goals:

- Meatless dinners 2-3 times a week

I'm sure it will be a lot of veggie stir fry. I love it and I can change it up with a different sauce. I'll have to find other recipes but will totally be doable.

- Water. I do a pretty good job but I have better days than others. I refill a bottle that I think is a liter but may be a liter and a half. I know you're not suppose to refill plastic bottles cause of something...I don't pay attention. I just ordered two 24oz Bubba tumblers that are BPA free (for whatever that's worth), will keep drinks cold for 5 hours which will be a huge plus in the summer. I can't wait for them to get here. Yes I'll have to keep up with two containers but they are healthier options.

- No alcohol on a weekday. I love a glass of wine or two but will refrain for the most part. Some days I just need it to get by.  Carpet people are crazy.

- Get back to running 2-3 times a week plus adding some cross training. I want to utilize our punching bag more and do videos whether on YouTube, workout video game or some of the Jillian videos I have.

- Start tracking again in MFP (request to be my friend. My username is calistarose).

All these things I know will help get me back into the right mindset. I did great last week for the first week back to a regular schedule.

I got back into the 150s but still flirting with the 160s and this week's off to a good start. Once I'm back to doing these more times than not, I'll find additional things to add to My Healthier Lifestyle 2014. Baby steps.

MLK Quotables

Yesterday we celebrated a man who was so influential in the history of America. Throughout the day I saw numerous quotes by Martin Luther King posted on social media and wanted to compile some of them here.

Semi Wordless Weekend...ok a lot of words weekend

Friday we went to see the movie Lone Survivor.  Holy moly was that movie intense.  I should have worn my nightgaurd as I clenched my jaw the entire movie.  But I would recommend the movie as a must see just don't take kids under the age of well I don't know but it's pretty gruesome in parts.

Saturday morning I took the time to organize my fingernail polish and put some color to my toes and nails.  It was way past time for my toes and I always like to have a little color on my nails even if I have to do them again two days later.

Two days in a row I was able to have a lunch date with the husband.  We went to Jimmy Changas, a newer Mexican restaurant here in the Katy area, Saturday afternoon.  The times we've gone before everything has been great.  This time the service was lack luster.  We waited for ever to be greeted at our table and then never got the appetizer we ordered.  Food was good though as always.  We were suppose to go to the horse track Saturday night as live racing started back this weekend.  We got lazy and never made it. We try to go a couple times during the live racing season.  It's always a good time especially when they have a concert there as well.

Sunday was a little cleaning, little sewing Lion King themed

and a little catching up with a friend I haven't seen since Thanksgiving.  And where else would two girls go to catch up but Hooters, duh.

I should either never wear my bangs back or never take pictures when I'm wearing my hair like that.  Hey big forehead!!!
Now it's back to the grind.  Happy MLK day!!! Carpet salesmen don't get that day off. :(

Does It Really Matter

  • Yesterday I thought it was Wednesday.  Nope that's today.
  • I have a free 3 month subscription for satellite radio that I'm loving but whenever I go under an over pass the silence always freaks me out.
  • I may have to get my own subscription of satellite radio when the free period ends.  I don't remember the last time I listened to local radio.
  • I'm a pretty organized person but trying to be even better in 2014.  Is that possible?!?! That includes clutter.  Don't need it.  Don't use it.  Must leave house.
  • The first half of the year is already planned and it's busy as always.  Must enjoy down time and free weekends.

Top 10 Moments of 2013

As one year has closed and another year has started, I began thinking about what happened and what we did over the past year and what the plans are for this year.

Top 10 Moments of 2013

  1. Traveling to New Orleans for the Super Bowl festivities in the city - even if you don't go to the game the energy in a city that is holding the game is electric.  There was a lot going on around town besides the big game.  We had the best time.

  2. In June, I went to the largest Honky Tonk in Texas, Billy Bob's to see one of my faovrite singers, Will Hoge.  I think everyone has to exprience Billy Bob's once in their life.
  3. Also in June, a group of us traveled to los Cabos, Mexico.  It was our big trip for the year and we also were able to celebrate our 2nd anniversary.  I love an all inclusive resort and could go to one anytime.  Mexico is always a great vacation.

  5. July we moved from the apartment that we had lived in for 5+ years.  It's where we got Petey (I don't recomend potty training a dog in a 3rd floor apartment), Jarad proposed and a lot more memories.  So it was bitter sweet to move but having a house and a yard for Petey has been a nice refresh.

  6. I finally redid our dining room furniture after years of telling Jarad that I was going to.  This seems silly to add to this list but it was something that for some reason I was afraid to do.  One of those experiences that added to the refresh once we moved in...out with the old in with the new and better.
  7. My mini van which Jarad always hated crapped out and I got a new car.  People buy cars every day but because I spend a tremendous time in my car it's always a big deal.  I don't have as much space in the new car but I love it.  Who wouldn't love satellite radio, bluetooth (no more wearing headphones to talk), better gas mileage, air condition that consistently works, etc.
  8. In August Natalie asked me if I wanted to train for a half marathon.  I agreed and it was the most rewarding and hardest thing to do.  We ran the marathon in November and I still get goose bumps thinking about it.  I finally understood Mind over Body.  Your body will a lot more than you think.  It's all about where you are mentally.

  9. Losing weight.  At my lowest I was down 20 pounds.  I was maintaing nicely but as my doctor said "I sat down" after the half marathon.  I'm not up the full loss but I need to stop the bulge.  I'm still proud of the weight I've lost and the decision to become healthier.  In 2014 I want to build on that and get in even better shape. And from all that I accomplished in 2013 I know that I can achieve an even healthier me this year with no problem.
  10. Having all the sisters in Houston for a weekend was a great time.  They had not all been here when there wasn't an event to attend.  It was fun being able to show them parts of the city and a laid back time.
  11. All those little moments that you don't necessarily remember but built the year, random weekends, visits from Natalie and Mom, trips back to Kentucky for sad and happy times, a night or weekend alone with the husband at home, etc etc.  2013 was a pretty great year.  I've been told your 30s are some of your best years and they haven't disappointed yet.
